SEO Versus Online Advertising

Comparing SEO and online advertising performance

Business owners often ask which one they should be doing, as though the two were alternatives. They answer different questions. Search optimisation asks how you become easier to find over time. Advertising asks how you get in front of the right people this week.

What Search Optimisation Does Well

SEO builds an asset. Pages that rank keep bringing visitors after the work is finished, and the cost per enquiry generally falls the longer it runs. It also carries a credibility that paid placement does not — many people scroll past the ads deliberately.

The trade-off is time. Meaningful movement usually takes months, not days, and results are difficult to guarantee because the ranking is not yours to control.

What Advertising Does Well

Advertising is fast, precise and testable. You can be visible tomorrow, target a specific area or audience, and know within a fortnight whether the offer works. For a new location, a seasonal push or a service you want to prove demand for, nothing else is as immediate.

The trade-off is that it stops when the budget stops. Advertising rents attention; it does not accumulate.

Where They Reinforce Each Other

Advertising data tells you which phrases and messages actually convert. That is the most reliable brief you can give your SEO work, and it is available in weeks rather than quarters.

In the other direction, the pages built for search — clear service descriptions, fast loading, straightforward forms — are the same pages that make advertising cheaper and more effective. Poor landing pages waste ad spend regardless of targeting.

Choosing Where to Start

If you need enquiries now, or you are testing a new service or area, start with advertising. If you have steady demand and want to reduce the cost of acquiring customers over time, start with search.

If your budget allows only one and you are a local service business, an accurate Google Business Profile and a well-organised website usually produce the best return per pound before any paid campaign begins.

A Sensible Middle Path

Many small businesses do well running a modest, tightly targeted advertising budget while search work builds underneath it. The advertising covers the gap; the search work gradually reduces how much of it you need.

Measure both against the same thing — qualified enquiries, not clicks or rankings — and the comparison becomes much easier to make.
