Why Your Google Business Profile Matters

Google Business Profile on a mobile phone

For a local business, your Google Business Profile is frequently the first thing a customer sees — and often the only thing. Someone searching for what you do on a phone may decide whether to call you before your website ever loads.

That makes the profile less of an administrative chore and more of a storefront. Here is what actually matters on it.

Accuracy Comes First

Name, address, phone number, hours and service area need to be correct and consistent with what appears on your website and in other directories. Conflicting information is one of the most common reasons a business underperforms in local results, and it is also the easiest thing to fix.

Pay particular attention to holiday hours and any change of phone number. A customer who calls a disconnected line does not usually try again.

Categories Tell Google What You Do

Your primary category carries real weight in which searches you appear for. Choose the one that matches the work you most want to be found for, then add secondary categories for genuine services you offer. Padding the list with loosely related categories tends to dilute rather than broaden.

Reviews Are Read More Carefully Than You Think

Volume matters, but recency and response matter too. A steady trickle of recent reviews reads as a business that is currently operating well. A cluster of reviews from three years ago reads as a business that may have changed hands.

Respond to reviews — all of them. A short, specific thank-you to a positive review and a calm reply to a critical one both signal that someone is paying attention.

Photos Do Quiet Persuasion

Real photographs of your premises, your team and your completed work build more confidence than any description. They also give a prospective customer a sense of whether you are the right size and style of business for them. Stock imagery rarely does either.

Add new photos periodically rather than uploading everything once and leaving it.

Regular Updates Keep the Profile Active

Posts, offers and service updates are a low-effort way to show current activity. They also give you somewhere to put seasonal information that does not warrant a page on your website.

Questions and Answers Are Public

The Q&A section is open to anyone, which means an unanswered question can sit there misleading people. Seed it with the questions you are asked most often, and check it periodically.

What Good Maintenance Looks Like

This is not a large ongoing commitment. A monthly pass — check the details, respond to new reviews, add a few photos, post one update — keeps a profile in good standing. The businesses that outrank their competitors locally are usually the ones doing this consistently rather than the ones doing something clever.
